China Internet & VPN
Complete Guide

Google, YouTube, WhatsApp, and Instagram are all blocked in China. Preparing your internet access before departure is essential, not optional. Find the right solution for you: eSIM, VPN, or roaming.

Reading time: 5 min Practical Guide

What is the Great Firewall?

China operates an internet censorship system known as the "Great Firewall", which blocks access to many international websites and services from within China.

Blocked Services

  • - Google (Search, Gmail, Maps, YouTube)
  • - WhatsApp, Line, Telegram
  • - Instagram, Facebook, X (Twitter)
  • - Uber, Netflix, Spotify

Services That Work

  • - WeChat (messaging)
  • - Alipay (payments)
  • - Baidu (search engine)
  • - DiDi (ride-hailing), Bilibili

3 Ways to Get Online in China

Choose the best option for your situation

Recommended

eSIM / International SIM

Easiest option

International data roaming bypasses the Great Firewall entirely. An eSIM is a digital SIM that installs on your phone without swapping physical cards.

  • Works immediately on arrival - no setup needed
  • Access Google, WhatsApp without VPN
  • Keep your existing number (dual SIM)

Price range: ~$5-$30 for 5-15 day plans
Popular providers: Holafly, Airalo

VPN

Essential if using Chinese SIM

A VPN routes your internet traffic through an overseas server, allowing you to bypass the firewall. Required when using Chinese SIM or local WiFi.

  • Must install BEFORE arriving in China
  • Install 2-3 apps (one may get blocked)
  • Enable auto-connect and kill switch

Price range: ~$5-$15/month
Popular options: ExpressVPN, NordVPN

Hotel / Cafe WiFi

Free but limited

Many international hotels provide internet access for guests, and some offer unrestricted connections that bypass the firewall.

  • Free to use
  • Not all hotels offer unrestricted access
  • No coverage when you're out - backup only

Tip: When booking hotels, check for "unrestricted internet" or "international WiFi" availability.

Bottom line: An eSIM is the most convenient option. Pair it with a VPN as backup for the best coverage.

Recommended Setup (4 Steps)

Follow these steps before departure and you'll be fully prepared

1

Buy & Install an eSIM

Purchase a China eSIM before your trip from providers like Holafly or Airalo. Installation takes just a few minutes.

  • - Supported on iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung/Pixel phones
  • - Install by scanning a QR code (takes under 5 minutes)
  • - A data-only eSIM is sufficient (keep your main SIM for calls)
2

Install 1-2 VPN Apps (Backup)

Even with an eSIM, install VPN apps as backup. They're also useful when connecting to hotel WiFi.

  • - Download and sign in before departure - this is critical
  • - Install at least 2 different VPN apps (in case one gets blocked)
  • - Enable auto-connect and kill switch features
3

Download Offline Maps

Download offline maps in case your internet connection is unstable.

  • - Baidu Maps or Amap (Gaode) recommended for China
  • - Google Maps may be inaccurate or non-functional in China
  • - Download offline maps for the cities you plan to visit
4

Download Offline Translation

Download offline language packs so you can translate even without internet.

  • - Google Translate - download Chinese offline pack
  • - Apple Translate - built-in on iPhone, download Chinese
  • - Camera translation works great for menus and street signs

Blocked Apps & Chinese Alternatives

Install these Chinese alternatives before your trip

Blocked App Chinese Alternative
Google Maps Baidu Maps / Amap (Gaode)
Google Search Baidu
WhatsApp / Messenger WeChat (Weixin)
Uber / Lyft DiDi (Didi Chuxing)
YouTube Bilibili / Youku
Instagram Xiaohongshu (RED / Little Red Book)

Install these alternatives and create accounts before departure for the smoothest experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use WhatsApp in China without a VPN?
No, WhatsApp is blocked by China's Great Firewall. You need either a VPN or data roaming/eSIM that routes through international servers to use WhatsApp. An eSIM is the easiest solution since it bypasses the firewall entirely without any extra configuration.
Can I download a VPN at the airport in China?
This is extremely difficult. VPN apps are blocked from download within China, and app stores remove VPN listings when accessed from Chinese networks. You must install and sign into your VPN apps before arriving in China. Once you land, it will be nearly impossible to download one.
What if my phone doesn't support eSIM?
If your phone doesn't support eSIM (older models), you can either activate international data roaming through your home carrier, or purchase a physical SIM card for China before departure. Airport kiosks and travel shops often sell China SIM cards. Make sure to also install VPN apps as a backup.
Can I buy a Chinese SIM card locally?
Yes, you can purchase a Chinese SIM card at airports or telecom stores (China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom). You'll need your passport for registration. However, a Chinese SIM is subject to the Great Firewall, meaning Google, YouTube, WhatsApp, and other services will be blocked. You'll need a separate VPN to access them.
Is hotel WiFi enough for my trip?
Hotel WiFi alone is not sufficient. While some international hotels offer unrestricted internet access, not all do, and the connection quality varies. More importantly, you won't have internet access when you're out exploring. For maps, translation, messaging, and ride-hailing, you'll need mobile data via eSIM or roaming.
